Murray State University is a 4-year public university located in Murray, which is the county seat of Calloway County, situated in the US state of Kentucky, with a population of more than 16 500 inhabitants, estimated during the 2009 census, and with more than 36 000 people (2008) living within the limits of its metropolitan area.
Murray State’s history started when the Senate Bill 14 was passed by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, to create a normal school due to the growing demand for professional teachers. On September 12, 1922, Murray was chosen as the site, Murray State Normal School being opened on September 23, 1923. Three years later, the school was renamed Murray State Normal School and Teachers College, being renamed again in 1930 as Murray State Teachers College and Murray State College in 1948, finally adopting its current name in 1966.
Today, Murray State has an enrollment of approximately 10 000 students, maintaining a strong academic reputation, being constantly highly ranked by various significant magazines such as U.S. News & World Report, which ranked the university one of the best for the past 18 years. Murray offers its students 11 associate, 64 bachelor’s and 42 master’s, as well as specialist programs, through 5 academic colleges and one school, including The College of Business and Public Affairs, which is the university’s largest college, enrolling 23% of undergraduate students.
The athletic teams from Murray State University are known as the Murray State Racers, who compete in the in the Ohio Valley Conference, in various men’s and women’s sports. The university is best known for its men’s basketball program, which made 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, the most recent one being in 2010. Murray’s basketball program has been recognized by ESPN as one of the top 30 basketball programs in modern history.
Since it first opened its doors to students, Murray State has produced numerous notable alumni, among the most resonant names on the list being: W. Earl Brown – actor, Joe Fulks - Basketball Hall of Famer and early pioneer of the jump shot, Rex Geveden - former Associate Administrator of NASA, Kenneth W. Winters - BS and former Murray State dean, Republican member of the Kentucky State Senate, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
